phoenix dust storm
pool cleaner

As pool owners, we rely on our Solar-Breeze NX2 to keep the pool skimmed.  Because we have so much sun in Arizona, our solar-powered robotic pool skimmer runs practically around the clock and does a great job of keeping our pool clean.  But, this is the time for some crazy weather in the Phoenix area, and we got our first monsoon storm this week.

According to University of Arizona, the monsoon hits the Phoenix area by the first or second week in July and hangs on until mid-September.  We kicked off monsoon 2018 with the dreaded dust storm or “haboob” (Arabic for “strong wind”).  A haboob is essentially a wall of dirt that can travel up to 30 mph, pushed by a thunderstorm cell. There are minor dust storms during monsoon, but according to the National Weather Service, we see an average of 3 haboobs per year from June through September.  This one was pretty amazing.

We live just a block from a mountain preserve, which means lots of blowing dust.  Our neighbors have huge pine trees and a giant ficus tree that is packed with leaves.  During the storm the high winds blew a TON of pine needles and leaves right into our yard and pool.  We checked the Solar-Breeze NX right after the storm had passed, and it had already picked up a full load of debris.  We emptied the tray and put it back to work.  It continued to pick up floating debris at a pretty fast rate – we were able to empty the tray again and put the robot back to work.  Even though there was no sun at this point, the robotic pool skimmer worked through the evening picking up leaves, dirt and pine needles.

The next morning we swept up a full 2 trash bags of debris from our pool deck and covered patio, but our pool was looking great!  Very little debris had the chance to sink to the bottom.  A run of our pool vac finished the pool cleaning job and we were back in business.

We know there are more storms to come in the next couple of months, and this is the time of year we really enjoy cooling off in the pool, so it’s important that it stays swim-ready.  It’s a relief to know the Solar-Breeze NX2 will do a major share of the pool cleaning and keep working, even through severe weather!

Check it out now (and you can see the trees we have to deal with in the background!).
