Pools & hot tubs have health needs, too.

Maintain your pool during COVID-19.

Children and families around the world have been asked to reduce outside contact by taking shelter at home. With gyms and public facilities have closed, the backyard pool provides an ideal escape for families to focus on their health and well-being during quarantine. Even during this time, pools need to be maintained properly, preferably by a pool service professional.

Proper sanitization, which includes regular circulation and water treatment, prevents the transmission of infectious diseases and helps maintain community health. Without it, various pathogens can grow, such as Pseudomonas, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Shigella, etc. Water that is not treated can also act as a breeding ground for mosquitoes or other pests, and the diseases they may carry.

Pool maintenance should be performed by an industry professional.

Pool service companies have been named an essential service, but if something has happened to your pool maintenance routine since the beginning of the pandemic, you can find an industry professional here.

If you are especially vulnerable during this time, you might have suspended service to limit visitors.

It’s important to know that you should not swim in your pool if it is not being maintained, and that “depending on the time frame, [the technician] may need to charge for a green pool turnaround at the end of the quarantine period,” said Blue Envy Pool Service in an Instagram post. “This added expense covers the cost of additional time and chemicals invested into getting your pool balanced again. We will do everything in our power to keep the added expense to a minimum but as a small business, we cannot absorb this cost – as much as we wish we could.”

If you are attempting to treat the pool yourself, remember that retailers are making accommodations.

If you are treating your own pool, you should do your research, purchase the necessary chemicals, and pick them up via curbside or have them shipped to your home. Be sure to read the entire label and follow all manufacturer instructions when applying and storing chemicals. Additionally, wear gloves and goggles, and store chemicals and material in a safe, secure place. Many chemicals that retailers sell can also be used for surface disinfection, drinking water treatment, and more, so be sure to ask.
