Running Your Pool Pump

An essential part of owning a pool is determining how many hours a day your pool pump should run. In sunbelt states, the pool pump is the second largest consumer of electricity after air conditioning the home, so pool owners don’t want to run the pump longer than necessary to keep the pool clean.

Pool water should be circulated by the pool pump at least once a day.  The pool pump filters the water and helps distribute chemicals. To figure out how many hours your pool pump should run each day, you need to know how much water is in your pool.  For rectangular or oval pools, multiply length x width x average depth x 7.5 to find the number of gallons.  If your pool depth varies greatly, you can divide your pool into sections, use the formula on each section and add the gallons together. Save this number!

Next, get to know your pool pump.  Pool pumps operate at different speeds, and some have variable speed settings. You’ll need to find out how many gallons per minute (gpm) of water your pump circulates.

Armed with your pump’s gpm and the number of gallons of water in your pool, you can calculate how many hours a day your pool pump should run.  Simply multiply (gpm) x 60 (minutes per hour).  This will tell you how many gallons of water will circulate per hour.  Then divide the total gallons of water in the pool by the gallons of water per hour to determine how many hours your pool pump should run. Here’s an example:

40 gpm speed x 60 = 2400 gallons per hour  

20,000 gallons in pool ÷ 2400 gallons per hour = 8.3 hrs
